In the rich soils near Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan is
where you will find Grandma Lou working along side her sons
on a farm that has been in the family since 1917. In the
1970’s the family farm became known as McDougall Acres
Ltd. As you might imagine the farm has seen many
Legume crops such as lentils and chickpeas still remain
foreign to many Canadians. As we have been growing more
legume and flax crops we have become more knowledgeable
about their many nutritional benefits. Over the years
our knowledge of how to prepare these foods has expanded.
Grandma Lou, her children and all her grandchildren, are
enjoying these foods. To make it easier for you to
use them with your family, Grandma Lou has provided recipes
or ideas on the back of each of the products and here on the
All of Grandma Lou’s products are grown in Saskatchewan,
primarily by McDougall Acres Ltd and a few other chosen
growers. We clean and bag the products ourselves.
The Canadian Food Guide tells us to include “a
small amount of unsaturated fat each day” and to choose “meat
alternatives such as beans and lentils often.” Seeds, such
as flax, contain unsaturated fat, the kind of fat our bodies
need. Legumes, such as lentils and chickpeas, also make good
choices for our diets.
We often hear and read about incorporating more legumes
into our diets and maybe you just don’t know where to start.
Over the years we have tried many recipes and used different
techniques to prepare our products. We have posted our
favourites on our website, and as we find more, we will
continue to add them. We would be happy to hear how you use
